One year later after Elon Musk unveiled the Powerwall, this solar powered, battery backup system is now hitting the market. This $3,000, 4ft tall, 214 pound device is now available for install in your home in Chicago. The Powerwall is a home battery that charges using solar panel electricity, or when utility charges are low, and provides electricity to your home in the evening or during power outages. Installing the Powerwall in your home could mean that you can power your home independently from the utility grid.
A net zero energy rating means that your home uses as much energy as it takes, however, it is still connected to the power grid when usage is high. The Powerwall also bridges the gap between high demand hours at night by using the solar power stored during the day. Also, during a power outage, the Powerwall provides a emergency backup to power your entire home or select appliances with an uninterrupted supply of electricity to your home in Chicago.
