Selling a home is just as stressful as buying one, especially when buying your new home is contingent on selling your current home. This type of situation can cause some uncertainty on where you and all your possessions will stay. Some people can be lucky enough to have friends and family to stay with, but even friends and family cannot always accommodate you and all of your belongings. Thus, temporary housing is one of the trickiest and most taxing aspects of moving to a new home.
Don’t fret though! There are plenty of methods to solving this problem. The first thing to consider is a post-possession agreement with your buyer. If you are selling to someone that does not need to move into the home immediately you can work out an arrangement where you may stay at the property for a period of time after closing. This can be an easy immediate fix to your problem, but also comes with a few downsides. Moving is difficult and does not always follow a firm schedule. As a result, if you are still living in your home and the buyer needs to move into the home things could get problematic. To avoid this, strict guidelines should be placed into the agreement to ensure that both parties get what they need out of the deal.
Another excellent choice would be utilizing a moving company for overnight storage. Some moving companies may offer the option for you to keep all of your belongings on a truck overnight for a certain amount of time. If you are going to be between homes for several days this is a great way to avoid constantly moving. There will of course be a charge; however, paying a small fee of usually around $200 is an affordable option compared to a storage unit which may rent for a similar amount, but will require your things being moved multiple times. With all of your belongings safely stored on a truck there is a smaller chance of damaging furniture or other large possessions since your stuff is being handled less frequently. Furthermore, the cost of the truck with a brief hotel stay for yourself is one of the most cost-effective options when you are closing on a home and have already sold your current home. Before you make the move take a minute and decide what the best decision would be for you and your family.
